Lactose intolerance test

The test detects genetic predisposition to lactose intolerance. Symptoms of lactose intolerance may include flatulence, abdominal bloating, vague abdominal pain and diarrhoea.

Lactose intolerance is a condition in which an intestinal enzyme called lactase functions insufficiently. The deficiency of the lactase enzyme, which breaks down lactose, is genetic. The genetic heritage that affects the lactase activity can be examined by performing a DNA test on a blood sample. In adults, this test provides clear results on whether they have the genetic heritage that causes lactose malabsorption.

In children, however, DNA tests do not provide a reliable indication of lactase activity. Lactase activity usually starts to decrease between the ages of 5 and 12. The symptoms of lactose intolerance rarely emerge before the age of five.

A lactose intolerance test is performed on a blood sample. The test does not require fasting or sampling in the morning.

The result will appear on MyKanta as a statement. The result will not be available in the Fimlab mobile app.

Please note that Fimlab is not responsible for interpretation of the results.
