Fimlab invests significantly in laboratory automation
Fimlab Laboratoriot Oy has made a significant procurement of laboratory automation equipment and supplies for the company’s diagnostic laboratories. The value of the procurement can rise up to 250 million euros.
The agreement was preceded by a public procurement process lasting over a year. The competition was won by Roche Diagnostics Oy, whose comprehensive solution provides good technological conditions for operational efficiency and cost savings.
– Our goal was to have a framework agreement period of at least ten years, during which it is possible to flexibly change, add, and update the equipment base as the changing healthcare environment requires, says Ari Miettinen, CEO of Fimlab.
Increased efficiency and capacity
Laboratory equipment is rapidly evolving. The newly acquired system brings new automation solutions, while also increasing production speed and capacity. The largest apparatus, to be installed at Tays, will analyse nearly 7500 samples per hour. Identical apparatus with slightly smaller capacity will be installed in Jyväskylä, Lahti, Hämeenlinna, and Vaasa. The new technology enables centralised control of production occurring in different locations.
– By increasing the level of automation, we can keep laboratory service prices very competitive and help curb healthcare cost development, adds Miettinen.
The renewal is a two-year effort
The installation of new equipment will take place over the next couple of years and will simultaneously change the operating methods in all Fimlab’s diagnostic laboratories. Installation and commissioning schedules will be carefully planned to avoid production interruptions that could hinder patient examinations and treatments.
– At Roche, we focus on delivering medical value, promoting innovation, and providing integrated solutions. Success in such a large-scale project would not be possible without excellent and seamless cooperation with Fimlab, emphasises Jaana Mantere, Customer Network Director at Roche Diagnostics.
