Ferritin is an iron-binding protein whose plasma level is used to measure the body iron stores. When interpreting these values, however, it is important to note that ferritin levels can be elevated by many other factors than just iron, such as acute and chronic inflammatory states. Reduced levels are caused by a lack of stored iron. Elevated levels are linked to liver diseases, many inflammatory states and chronic diseases, as well as some cancers. The ferritin test is performed on a blood sample. The test does not require fasting or sampling in the morning. Please note that Fimlab is not responsible for interpretation of the results.
