Folate (or vitamin B9) is a water-soluble vitamin required for cell division and blood cell formation. Adequate intake of folate is especially important for pregnant women because it reduces the risk of neural tube defects in the foetus. Folate deficiency can be caused by inadequate intake (due to an unbalanced diet or impaired absorption, e.g. celiac disease), increased daily need (e.g. due to pregnancy and breast-feeding) or certain medications. The folate levels are analysed from a blood sample, which is collected after 10–14 hours of fasting. Do not eat anything or drink anything other than water during the 10–14 hours before sample collection. You can take your medications normally in the morning.
