Frozen embryo storage agreement
The customer signs a frozen embryo storage agreement when starting in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment at the Hormone and Infertility Clinic of Tampere University Hospital (Tays) Women’s Clinic.
After three years of treatment, the storage of frozen embryos is automatically transferred to Fimlab Laboratories Ltd. The agreement remains valid until further notice and continues until there are no embryos remaining or the woman reaches the age of 45*.
Storage is billed automatically each year in accordance with the current price list*. Issued invoices cannot be cancelled, and storage fees already paid will not be refunded even if the storage agreement is terminated during the billing period.
Storage agreement termination
If you wish to end the storage of frozen embryos before the agreement expires, please complete a separate termination notice. Completing the form requires strong authentication.
You may submit a termination notice at any point during the storage period. The remaining embryos can be discarded, donated for method development, or donated to an unknown couple or a single woman. Please indicate in the termination notice which of these options you choose. Read more about the available options.
Completing the termination notice and choosing to have the embryos discarded by any of the methods described above means that eligibility for publicly funded fertility treatments will end.
If the storage agreement involves two individuals, it is important that both submit their own termination notice. If the termination notices for the same agreement differ from each other, or if one person’s notice is missing, the frozen embryos will be automatically discarded after the termination.

The embryos will be removed from storage and discarded together with their identifying information.
Embryo donation for method development
Embryos donated for method development help improve laboratory operations. They may be used, for example, to test the functionality of equipment in the fertility laboratory, to monitor and ensure the quality of culture media, and in connection with the introduction of new techniques.
If the storage agreement involves two individuals, donation of embryos for method development always requires the consent of both parties.
The embryos are handled without identifying information and are ultimately discarded.
Embryo donation
If the storage agreement involves two individuals, donating embryos for treatment of an unknown couple or a single woman always requires the consent of both parties. Embryos created using donated eggs or donated sperm cannot be donated further.

Woman’s age
*The storage agreement will automatically terminate when the woman reaches the age of 45. At that time, the embryos will be discarded, unless the customer chooses to transfer them for storage to a private clinic. If you wish to transfer your embryos to a private clinic, please contact your chosen clinic and the Fimlab Fertility Laboratory to arrange the transfer.
If the customer turns 45 during a storage period, the embryos may remain in storage until the customer’s birthday. However, the full storage fee for the entire storage period will still be charged.*
