Ferritin is an iron-binding protein whose plasma level is used to measure the body’s iron stores. When interpreting these values, however, it is important to note that ferritin levels can be elevated by many others factors than just iron, such as acute and chronic inflammation.
Reduced levels are caused by a lack of stored iron. Elevated levels are linked to liver damage, many inflammations and chronic diseases, as well as some cancers.
