Folate (or vitamin B9) is a water-soluble vitamin required for cell division and blood cell formation. Adequate intake of folate is especially important for pregnant women because it reduces the risk of neural tube defects in the foetus.

Folate deficiency can be caused by inadequate intake (due to an unbalanced diet or impaired absorption, e.g. celiac disease), increased daily need (e.g. due to pregnancy) or certain medications.

Since dietary folate always causes momentary fluctuations in serum folate levels, the test will require a fasting sample.
