The pregnancy test measures the placental hormone of the developing embryo, chorionic gonadotropin, which is secreted in the blood and urine of a pregnant woman. Pregnancy can usually be diagnosed on the first day of a missed period. The placental hormone levels may be too low to be detected if the urine is highly diluted during early pregnancy.
