The function of transferrin receptors is to carry iron that is bound to transferrin into the cell. Cellular iron deficiency increases the number of transferrin receptors on cell membranes, which causes increased levels of transferrin receptors dissolved in plasma.

Measuring the plasma transferrin receptor (P -TfR) levels is currently considered the single most effective method to diagnose iron deficiency anaemia, as TfR levels are not affected by inflammatory conditions or infections.
