Vitamin B12 is a vitamin that is essential for the functioning of the nervous system and the brain, and can only be obtained from foods of animal origin. A vegan diet does not provide enough vitamin B12. Certain intestinal diseases or medications may also hinder vitamin B12 absorption.
Deficiency causes anaemia, fatigue and various symptoms of the nervous system (e.g. tingling, numbness and sensory disturbances in the limbs).
Vitamin B12 is bound to two carrier proteins in the bloodstream: transcobalamin (TC2) and haptocorrin. The former is the biologically active form of the vitamin and also the primary factor when assessing vitamin B12 deficiency.
