Lactose intolerance, DNA test
Abbreviation: B -Lakt-D
Test number: 4614
Lactose intolerance is a condition in which an intestinal enzyme called lactase functions insufficiently. The deficiency of the lactase enzyme, which breaks down lactose, is hereditary. Around 17% of Finns have a genetic heritage that reduces lactase activity. The genetic heritage that affects the lactase activity can be examined by performing a DNA test from a blood sample. In adults, this test provides clear results on whether they have the genetic heritage that causes lactose malabsorption.
In addition to the genetic heritage, the development of symptoms is affected by the amount of lactose ingested, gut microbiome and individual variation. For example, it is extremely rare for the small amounts of lactose in medications to cause symptoms.
In children, however, DNA tests do not provide a reliable indication of lactase activity. Lactase activity usually starts to decrease between the ages of 5 and 12. The symptoms of lactose intolerance rarely emerge before the age of five.
