CLOSTRIDIUM DIFFICILE TOXIN GENE FROM STOOL

The sample is examined for the toxin gene of the Clostridium difficile bacterium causing diarrhoea during antibiotic treatment.

Sample collection

Collect a small amount of stool into a FecalSwab tube.

Store the FecalSwab tube at room temperature before sample collection.

Defecate on a suitable surface (e.g. a disposable plate) for sample collection.

Take the sample of diarrhoeic stool by dipping the tip of the cotton swab into the stool or of slightly more solid stool by dipping max. 1 cm of the tip of the cotton swab into the stool. Snap the cotton swab in half inside the FecalSwab tube at the line marked on the swab. Seal the tube carefully.

The name tag is necessary for identifying the sample

Stick a label on to the side of the tube. Write on it your

  • name
  • social security number
  • date of sample

After sample collection, place the FecalSwab tube in a plastic bag. Seal the bag tightly. Store the sample in a cool place (+2ºC ‐ +8ºC) and deliver it to the laboratory as soon as possible (no later than on the next working day).
